Speed of Life's "future" isn't much different than our current present except for the fact that Alexa and Siri-like virtual monitors really do monitor and detect everything people say, and the elderly are kept away from. A curious hybrid of disaffected-youth movie and terminal-illness weepie, this no-way-out drama generates considerable sympathy for a protagonist hemmed in by dwindling options. College age Drew (Scott Caan) is devoted to his (Leo Burmester), who was crippled by a stroke. Speed of Life features Drew (Caan) trying to care for dad, stricken with Alzheimer's. SPEED OF LIFE isn't as funny or as deep as it would like (or arguably needs) to be, but there is a heartfelt sweetness that permeates much of the film. Most of the credit goes to Dowd, who treats the droopy material with her typical grace and nuance.
