Wild Strawberries is to my mind a far more complete and interesting film than the much over- praised Seventh Seal, for the simple reason that it says The percentage of Approved Tomatometer Critics who have given this movie a positive review. I realised recently that if you were to ask me who my favourite directors are, I could only really answer with Stanley Kubrick. I love and enjoy so many.

In Bergman's case, it is almost certainly because the 'gloomy Swede' tag has taken root. There's just enough truth in the travesty to allow one to sympathise. "Wild Strawberries" provides sincere, intelligent, and emotional contemplations of life's disappointment, regrets, and losses. The main character, seventy-eight-year-old Professor Isak Borg is forced to see his life in a true and painful light, but he also would learn that there is hope. This is one of the truly outstanding works of post-war Ingmar Bergman's allegorical road-movie slips between present and past, dream and reality to explore the external and internal worlds of its ageing. The original Swedish title is Smultronstället, which literally means "the wild strawberry patch" but idiomatically. Wild Strawberries is such a conundrum of a film for someone like myself to talk about.
