"Love, Simon" is a mainstream-styled teenage rom-com that uses every cliche in the book. There's the nerdy Vice Principal, the bacchanalian high I did not see the movie at a press screening surrounded by critics. I went to an audience preview, and the excitement as the lights dimmed was palpable.
Love Simon is a groundbreaking, heart wrenching movie that will leave you in tears. It is the first movie of its kind, promoting the LGTBQ+ community and chang. Simon is, of course, the character on which the whole movie hinges, and Robinson is able to deliver a multifaceted performance as the eponymous lead.
Something happened at my screening of Love, Simon that I've not experienced in a theater in quite some time… if ever. Love, Simon comes from the wildly popular and award winning YA novel called Simon vs. The Homo Sapien's Agenda by Becky Albertalli and is about Simon Spier. The mystery becomes trickier when drama-club nerd Martin (Logan Miller) discovers Simon's secret and agrees. A studio-made romantic comedy for teens with a closeted gay protagonist marks an important first, even if the movie is pretty "Love, Simon" is so accessible that gay teens don't even appear to be its target audience; rather, the movie seems more ideally suited to young. For the most part, "Love, Simon" is an amiable, slick, silver-tongued teen romantic comedy.
