"Return of the Jedi" is both a familiar movie and a new one. It concludes the stories of the major human characters in the saga, particularly Skywalker, Han Solo, Princess Leia and Darth Vader. It revisits other characters who seem either more or less than human, including Ben (Obi-Wan) Kenobi.
The ultimate example of this movie's problems? The moment where Luke throws away his lightsaber after realising that he's becoming like his father. Lucas has once again recycled the B movies of his youth: jungle movies, gangster movies, pirate movies, you name it.
He culls bits from them that still have oomph and mounts them with a Sesame-Street zap. Queen of spleen critic Pauline Kael called it "an impersonal and rather junky piece of moviemaking" while the rest of the world clearly thought otherwise (and so did In this final episode (of the middle trilogy at least), the evil Empire has managed to claw back power and get a substantial way through. It's a little dated but still a very well-made film. I still enjoy watching the movie after a very long time of not watching the film. Although Return of the Jedi is officially Part VI of George Lucas's projected Star Wars nonogy, it's actually, of course, the third to have been filmed, completing the central triad of his ambitious undertaking. Unfortunately, it conveys the sense that the machinery has already started to wear down.
