Carlito's Way movie reviews & Metacritic score: A Puerto Rican former convict, just released from prison, pledges to stay away from drugs and violence despit. Carlito's Way is a tale of a former hood trying to escape his former life. Al Pacino is Carlito Brigante, a high-level Puerto Rican drug dealer sprung from a three-decade jail sentence after only five years, thanks to a technicality and his sleazy, cocaine-addled lawyer, Dave Kleinfeld (Sean Penn).
The movie is narrated by Carlito himself, who explains his hopes, his strategies, and especially his mistakes. One of those is surely to have chosen Kleinfeld as his lawyer. The acting here, by Sean Penn, is a virtuoso tour de force - one of those performances that takes on a life of its own.

Carlito takes over the management of a club in Spanish Harlem, pockets loose cash that comes his way after he's accidentally mixed up in a shoot-out, gets non-commitally together with old gang buddies, and makes a play for his ex-girlfriend (Miller). "Carlito's Way" is supposedly fueled by Carlito's dreams, which are to open a car rental business in the Bahamas (really) and resume his romance with Gail (Penelope Ann Miller), the kind of woman who calls him Charlie. But the film's real heart is in the very places Carlito speaks of escaping: the seedy. But there's a secondhand feel to the way this gangster movie delivers the goods. Carlito's Way is haunted by a ghost from De Palma and Pacino's past. Although Carlito's Way in a sense represents the falling motion to Scarface's rising action, it lacks the nervous, overstuffed agitation of Scarface, replacing Carlito's Way and The Untouchables also share a grand, constructed artificiality.
