Mystic River has big, serious star power and big, serious themes; there are moments of power and flickers of meaning, but it is ultimately hollow and unsatisfying. It's hard to believe, but Mystic River is Clint Eastwood's twenty-fourth feature film as a director. In the fabric of humanity, there were three tiny strands: Sean, Jimmy and Dave. A trio of souls woven as tightly as you could imagine. Mystic River's author, Dennis Lehane, almost didn't let his novel get a Hollywood makeover. Too many suggestions that he radically alter his grim work.

Mystic River and Unforgiven are my two favorite Clint Eastwood films and depending on which one I see last I tend to put in first place. Right now I'm inclined to declare Mystic River as Eastwood's best film, but that is subject to change anytime (perhaps even before I finish writing this review). Mystic River, Clint Eastwood's adaptation of Dennis Lehane's textured novel, enjoys such clout, and with good reason.
From a storytelling standpoint, River actually is Eastwood's most ambitious project in years, with multiple subplots growing like weeds in an untended patch. Then it's on to grabbing audiences who aren't scared off by the twisted side of These lost boys are the focus of the movie.
