At this point in reviews of movies like "The Fall" (not that there are any), I usually announce that I have accomplished my work. "The Fall" is beautiful for its own sake. And there is the sweet charm of the young Romanian actress Catinca Untaru, who may have been dubbed for all I know, but speaks with. "The Fall" is a very well filmed and developed story. The acting of all the cast is accurate and right The review remains the same except the pace of the episodes.
Does The Fall amount to anything more than a vast sugar-frosted folly? I'm not convinced it does, although its wanton extravagance is not without charm. The world turns on the premise that people can recognize themselves in each other, but the masks in "The Fall" work to fog that mirror.
There's nary a frame of this film that is not a true. A chunk of the movie is composed of fantasy sequences as Roy spins a fantastical, sometimes nonsensical adventure story. What makes The Fall compelling viewing in spite of its disturbing subject matter? How does it rate as a realistic crime drama -- and does it matter? The Fall cunningly blends several familiar plot designs with brilliantly surrealistic imagery to create an epic movie that visually appears unlike any other, yet still feels oddly recycled. On the surface, The Fall is a very simple story about a little girl named Alexandria and a man named Roy and the story that manages to bridge the gap between them.
