David Lynch's "Lost Highway'' is like kissing a mirror: You like what you see, but it's not much fun, and kind of cold. It's a shaggy ghost story, an exercise in style, a film made with a certain breezy contempt for audiences. I've seen it twice, hoping to make sense of it.
What you see is all you get. It stars Bill Pullman, Patricia Arquette, Balthazar Getty, and Robert Blake. The film follows a musician (Pullman) who begins receiving mysterious VHS tapes of him and his wife (Arquette) in their home, and who is suddenly convicted of murder, after which he inexplicably disappears and is.
The first thirty minutes of LOST HIGHWAY are a David Lynch fan's dream. All his trademarks are there -- the darkness, the atmospheric soundtrack, the rich colors, the exquisitely slow pacing, the long silences, the disturbing mystery. How does Amazon calculate star ratings?. Lost Highway was to be the first of what John David Ebert calls his "Los Angeles Trilogy," the second being Mulholland Drive and the third being Inland Empire. Although, I must admit Inland Empire is probably the strangest and most unsolvable of the "Trilogy," and possibly of all his films, ever. Lost Highway, I found, was his most well-written.

Read the Empire Movie review of Lost Highway. Glad to report that David Lynch is still circling planet earth in a spaceship with his mind located. With Bill Pullman, Patricia Arquette, John Roselius, Louis Eppolito.
After a bizarre encounter at a party with a stranger, a jazz saxophonist is framed for the murder of his wife and sent to prison, where he inexplicably morphs into a young mechanic, gets released, and begins leading a new life. Lost Highway probably grew in Lynch's mind as a little, personal challenge: staying out of the sales pressure is always possible but movies which don't sell can be a problem for anyone (Dune was a nice example), the real challenge was creating films that can become commercial successes, and at the same time preserving the identity of the. Until now, Lost Highway is lean and tense, and it starts to go slack during a prison sequence that feels like a Warner Bros. B movie from the back lot got illogically wedged into one of Antonioni's chronicles of slow-burning anxiety.
